I first had these a few weeks ago, and they immediately became my go-to starter at Hugo’s, alongside one of the house margaritas — with salt, thanks.
Small blue corn tortillas topped with a slather of those heavenly refried black beans that Hugo’s makes, a bit of slaw and diced tomatoes, a slice [...]
When I need a Tex-Mex fix, it’s hard to beat the carnitas nachos at El Tiempo (Richmond location). A hot plate of tortilla chips topped with a bit of beans and cheese and then liberally blanketed with shredded carnitas (that’s braised and roasted pork, for the sadly uninitiated) with just the right balance of tender interior [...]
This lovely concoction jolted me out of a summer haze — just lightly sweet, with pretty floral, dried herb and spice aromatics and a refreshing finish. It’s made from Old Tom Gin, Cocchi Americano (a low-alcohol, wine-based aperitif that’s sort of the Italian equivalent of Lillet) and Aperol, shaken gently with ice, and served up [...]
A recent lunch at Mockingbird Bistro included this off-the-menu duck salad. Falling off the bone tender duck leg topped fresh greens drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette and accompanied by slices of smoked duck breast, fresh tomatoes and a just-hardboiled egg.

Moeller’s [...]
Okay, we’re really going to move on to the “See” and “Shop” categories any second now, but first — one more Taste treat from our recent stop at Revival Market.
This Peach Confit is made on the premises from Texas peaches (which they also sell). It is intensely peachy, naturally enough, laced with vanilla, [...]
I’ve been happily following pastry chef Rebecca Masson around town since I first tasted her baked goodies at 17 at the Alden Hotel back in 2006. Those lavender madeleines and the fig cake with cream cheese ice cream still linger in my memory. As does the lemon pie with Italian meringue that [...]
Masala chai (literally “spiced tea”) is one of those beverages that can inspire fierce debate and loyalty. Once you’ve fallen for the stuff (in my case, it was at a hotel in Udaipur, India), you’re always looking to replicate that first well-loved concoction. Chances are, you never will.
For masala chai is [...]
